Foreign nurses ‘get a bad deal’
MANY foreign nurses hate the NHS so much they want to leave for jobs aboard once they get to Britain, a survey suggests.
Many claim they are badly treated here and are being ripped off by recruitment agencies.
Two-thirds of Filipino nurse- one of the largest overseas groups-see the US as a better place to work, the Royal College of Nursing found.
African nurses often feel they are being under-graded and underpaid here. But the survey also found that most nurses would stay in Britain if they were treated more fairly.
There are 16,000 overseas nurses in London, making up a quarter of the city`s nursing population.
Hospitals were accused of playing a ‘high-risk game’. Report author Prof James Buchan said: ‘Without them, part of the health service would collapse. The NHS needs to up its efforts to grow its own workforce.’
Nurses from 30 countries took part in the survey, which asked why they chose to work in Britain and how long they intended to stay.
Four in ten said they were planning to leave. RCN general secretary Beverly Malone said: ‘We`ve got to find a better way of treating this vital group of workers. Unless we address this issue fast those nurses thinking of moving to another country are more likely to make the move and that could have serious consequences for the NHS.’
The Department of Health said more nurses in England were being trained than ever before.
